City’s budget gap is growing

CHICAGO (STNG)  -- The Daley Administration says, with the global economic crisis continuing, the City’s budget gap is growing even larger.

WBBM Political editor Craig Dellimore reports that tax revenues are way down and Snow removal costs have been higher.

Chicago’s new Chief Financial Officer Gene Saffold says that a $33 million dollar budget gap a month ago has now turned into a $51 million dollar shortfall.

Saffold says the City is currently crafting a plan to try to close that gap, and he acknowledges the biggest factor is the cost of unionized City employees. But he steadfastly refuses to say what’s being asked of the unions or whether this budget can be balanced without more layoffs.

The only bright spot in the financial picture? Real Estate sales are rebounding ever so slightly which could potentially help on the revenue side, at some point.
