4 Hurt In Loop Crash

CHICAGO (STNG) - Four people were critically injured in a two-vehicle crash that left a van overturned on a pedestrian crosswalk early Friday in the Loop.

Emergency crews responded to the crash at Franklin and Madison streets about 1:20 a.m., according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford, who said an EMS Plan 1, which sends five ambulances to the scene, was called to the two-vehicle crash involving a Chevy Ventura van and a Pontiac Sunfire.

Four people inside the Firebird were critically injured in the crash. Two people were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and two people were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Langford said.

Preliminary police information indicated a fifth person was also hospitalized, police News Affairs Officer John Henry said.

Four other people, who were inside the van at the time of the crash, refused medical treatment.

The impact of the two vehicles left the van overturned, sitting on top of a crosswalk at the northwest corner of the intersection blocking most of the most western lane of Franklin Street, Langford said.

The Firebird was heavily damaged in the crash and appeared to be half of its width on its passenger side, Langford said.

The accident was secured by emergency crews about 1:35 a.m.

Police could not provide immediate information on the crash early Friday but remained at the scene.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation, Henry said.
