City's Clergy Plans Prayer Rally For Burris
|
CHICAGO (CBS) ― Some of the state's most prestigious clergy leaders will gather Sunday, March 1 at 5 p.m. at New Covenant Baptist Church, 740 East 77th Street, to conduct a prayer and support service for Sen. Roland Burris, according to a news release.
The senator will be hosted by Rev. Stephen J. Thurston, president of the National Convention of America, the largest African-American church association in the nation, Rev. Dr. Albert Tyson III, president of Clergy Speaks Interdenominational, Rev. Walter P. Turner, president of the Illinois Faith-Based Association and a host of other bishops and ministers from across various denominations.
"The intent of the service is to lend our voices and our petitions to the Lord on behalf of our President, the nation, the state of Illinois, and Senator Burris and his family in these very difficult times. I know that we are all people who believe in the power of prayer, and prayer is what is needed in this time of stress," said Rev. Tyson.
Sen. Burris is expected to address the audience at the prayer vigil in his first, formal public remarks since pledging to talk with the media in wake of repeated calls for his resignation.
However, the senator will not engage questions from the press.
