Burris Expects To join Senate 'Very Shortly'

WASHINGTON (AP) - Roland Burris said Wednesday he should be able to join the Senate ``very shortly,'' after talking to newly supportive Democratic leaders and working on lingering legal obstacles.

Talking to reporters on the second day of a Washington power odyssey that would intimidate many, the 71-year-old Burris declared himself ``very happy'' and said he was pleased with his meeting with Sens. Harry Reid and Dick Durbin.

``My whole interest in this experience is to be prepared'' to lead Illinois, Burris said, ``and very shortly I will have the opportunity to do that.''

Burris' legal issues include a pending decision by a court in his home state on whether Secretary of State Jesse White's signature is required on his certification papers. He's also expected to appear Thursday before a committee considering the impeachment of Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who appointed him to take Barack Obama's Senate seat.

For his part, Obama stood above the fray, telling his own news conference that the decision on whether to allow Burris to join the Senate is a decision for Senate leaders. He did say that he knew him, liked him and would be happy to work with him if he is seated.

Earlier, Reid, D-Nev., emerged with Durbin from a private meeting they had in the Capitol building with Burris, the former attorney general of Illinois.

Reid said the Senate was awaiting a ruling by the state court that tests whether White has to put his signature on Burris' letter of appointment. White has taken the position that Blagojevich, accused of seeking to benefit financially from filling Obama's seat, did not have legal authority to make the appointment.

Of Burris, Reid told reporters: ``We don't have a problem with him as an individual.''

And both he and Durbin, D-Ill., dramatically softened their party's opposition to seating any Blagojevich appointee.

Knowledgeable Senate officials said the visual embrace of Burris was meant to show acceptance of his personal and professional qualifications, an indication that opposition to seating him was waning.

Burris was on the second day of a bizarre introduction to Capitol Hill, standing in the rain Tuesday to say he wouldn't be seated and then giving a much more upbeat assessment of prospects Wednesday after his meeting with Reid and Durbin.

Burris was asked about the obviously warmer reception he got the second time around this week.

``I don't know what pressure they were under, but they, I guess they have to keep the integrity of the Senate,'' he said. ``And they did not want to rush into anything and make a decision where they have to then be trying to reverse that. And that would even be worse.''

Asked if he, Reid and Durbin discussed any conditions under which he could be seated, he said that subject ``wasn't even on their radar screen.''

When a reporter inquired as to whether Burris might have had any ``pay to play'' discussions with Blagojevich or his office, Burris said that couldn't have happened ``because I don't have no money.''

Shari
Burris should NOT be allowed to take the seat because the IL Secretary of State did NOT sign to certify the appointment. Period.

CraigF
are you kidding me?
01/07/2009 9:38AM
Did you read between the lines??
So. Laws WERE made to be broken or twisted or interpreted to your own convenience. Lawmakers, you made your bed now let Burris sleep on it. Yep!!
01/07/2009 9:39AM
Dom
We in Illinois look like a bunch of clowns!!!!

Oh how I love the posturing only to find them to be empty words . . . .
01/07/2009 9:40AM
lizzie
the sec'y of state was legally not within his rights. It was his duty to sign the appointment. He does not have the authority to override the governor's legal appointment. It is that simeple.
01/07/2009 9:41AM
dmm
he will not be my rep. What a bunch of do nothings. No guts at all.

NO NO NO
We do not want Burris. We want an election.
01/07/2009 9:43AM
Politics at its finest
The Democrats are off to a flying start leading the country (at least until the next election). God forbid we have a special election and a Republican might actually win this tainted seat. Burris's ego has gotten in the way of his judgment; a qualitythat will make him a fine senator. He knows this is the only way he could ever hold an office this high. The voters of Illinois have repeatedly rejected him, yet here he is. We should all be very proud.
01/07/2009 9:43AM
Jackie
If Roland were white, there would have been no opposition to his appointment. The U.S. Senate intends on keeping its membership lily white. Once again, racism raises its ugly head!
01/07/2009 9:46AM
Dems show what they are made of
How could we have guessed? No matter all the statements and chest pounding when the time comes all is forgotten and the only important thing is that the seat stay with a Democrat. So much for being accountable just roll over and make sure your buddy gets his cushy job. This is honor amoung thieves.
01/07/2009 9:46AM
Jim
Let get on with the job of the Senate, governing...Burris has the credentials to be there, so let it be...after all, Rod has to pay his attorneys with something besides a bad hair doo
01/07/2009 9:48AM
same'ol same
totally and completely predictable.
01/07/2009 9:48AM
Race has nothing to do with this
Jackie is WAY off and her suggestion is insulting and simplistic. It has nothing to do with the race of the appointee. It has to do with the integrity of the appointer and the judgment of the appointee. Both are lacking. If Burris was white, there would be exactly the same reaction. This has far more to do with politics than race.
01/07/2009 9:51AM
Race
A clown was put in by a clown.
01/07/2009 9:51AM
Burris is the man
Burris is well respected and deserves to be in the Senate. Don't blame him for Blago's doings.
01/07/2009 9:53AM
Paul
Man oh man.. Dom, you are right. Illinois looks totally corrupt. I grew up in Chicago but have lived in Georgia the past 25 years. Folks aroud here view Illinois politics as totally corrupt and for the most part, think that the people of Illinois aregetting screwed.
01/07/2009 10:02AM
Don
As a former resident of Illinois, we now sit back with wonder and thoroughly enjoy the squirming and twisting of a totally corrupt democrat party in both the state and, unfortunately, our country.
01/07/2009 10:03AM
I know nothing, nothing
Well one for Blago. Good for Burris.
01/07/2009 10:11AM
Idiotic
There was never any legal standing to deny whomever to be seated as an appointee by a sitting governor. Why these so called lawyers (state and federal) would even entertain the notion of deny an appointee was idiotic, and was self defeating, if not stupid. How could the Senate deny Burris in the first place, when they can%u2019t even remove Larry Craig of Idahofrom the senate.
01/07/2009 10:13AM
He must have gotten a sweet deal.
Anyway, Burris just will be treated like the oddball relative that sits in corner, rocking back and forth at family parties. Everybody will just say "ignore him".
01/07/2009 10:22AM
Hmmmm..
It looks like the Black Caucus got to Jesse White. He previously opined publicly that he would refuse to certify the appointment of Burris. But know he says its ceremonial and they are he best of friends.
01/07/2009 10:25AM
It's about the law
If Blago hadn't been arrested there would be no prpblem seating Burris. He's a good man with a clean record. Yke law says the governor must appoint Obama's replacement. Blago is the governor so he's legally responsible for doing this. The law saysthe secretary of state has to certify the appointment and send it to the Senate. It's not a choice, it's Jesse's responsibility.
01/07/2009 10:27AM
Who's To Blame?
Instead of blaming the entire democratic party for Blago abusing his authority and demeaning the office of Governor ...Why not realize that the problem the other democrats have could be the color of Burris'skin, it could be the corruption of Blago, it could be the fact that a lot of people knew, but just weren't willing to tell, but the one thing that it know that the decision is and was based on is .....The Law. They're in place whether we like them or not. As a matter of fact and not opinion....the democrats opposed, but soon realized that whether they liked it or not they had to submit to the law. This is good because it brings the lawmakers of the Illinois and United States to the mercy of the the very thing that they vow to protect and uphold. Had they not upheld "The LAw" wouldn't they be doing the very thing that they are persecuting Blago for? Some things we just have to accept. Like Obama being president...instead of opposing it or making rude personal comments about him, why not just rally behind him and get this country back on track. If not him, somebody in this new administration knows how to do it-ANY country(Look around-Look around) divided against itself WILL fall. Look at the past 8 years and catch yourself before we ALL hit the ground!!!
01/07/2009 10:28AM
Polictical Theatre at its finest
Can anyone who knows anything about Illinois politics be surprised? This is totally scripted. I'm totally fed-up with the clowns in office. As a people we need to vote them out of office as soon as the next election or continued to be abused by thesethugs.
01/07/2009 10:34AM
TYPICAL CHICKENS
It just goes to show you that the Deomcrats are a bunch of liars & chickens. The minute Bobby Rush, ex-Black Panther I might add, pulls out the race card, their knees buckle. If it had been a white choice, they would stuck to their word and not let himor her take the seat. But just more proof who the Democrats are for & who they are going to screw the next 4 years. And I don't mean Monica Lewinsky!!!
01/07/2009 10:41AM
Impeachment?
Another thought on the farce currently going on in Springfield...what are the chances Govenor (Dead Meat) Blago will be impeached or resign? Sorry to be a cynic but it's all for show.
01/07/2009 10:42AM
Rewrite this article
Harry Reid just spoke and said this decision is in the hands of the Illinois Supreme Court. If we can get the governor into impeachment by Friday, we can void the appointment and have a special election or appointment by Pat Quinn.
01/07/2009 10:48AM
Oh Shut -up!
Democrats this, Democrats that. After 8 years of having to put up with what the Evil Empire has done to this country you should keep your tail between your legs and hope things get better. The thought that someone can overlook our current situation and gripe about the party that hasn't even taken office yet is astounding.
01/07/2009 10:51AM
STOP
This is a slap in the face to the people of Illinois! Its time we the people stand up and say NO to the political games being played in Illinois and Chicago.
01/07/2009 10:52AM
Credibility
Burris should be emabarrassed. The fact that he accepted the appointment from a corrupt governor give him almost as much credibility as Blago.
01/07/2009 10:53AM
I voted for Obama in 2004
I did not vote for Roland Burris to represent me. But when do politicians really represent us anyway. This is the kind of thing that is making me more serious about leaving the city, and the state. Daley, Stroger, Blagojevich, the infighting the inherited offices, the kickbacks, the hiring of friends and family the mayor with no term limit the insane taxes and on and on. Oh, but we might get the Olympics!
01/07/2009 10:54AM
No, Maybe, Yes
This is the way politicians run our government. Obama is backing off already?
01/07/2009 11:00AM
Obama first said no way!
Now, he is ready to work with Burris? I forgot, he is from Illinois!
01/07/2009 11:03AM
Hey, Jackie! Jan 7
Let's choose by race, not by qualifications! Lets make you happy!
01/07/2009 11:08AM
Desperate Man...
While Mr. Burris is a fine public official with a great reputation, the fact that he is so willing to take an appointment from a %u201Ctainted%u201D governor shows how desperate he is to take an office he never would have won through a traditional election. By standing with Blagoveich and choosing to participate in this circuit, Mr. Burris is only further damaging his career, reputation and the Democratic Party as a whole. I am especially disappointed in the African American politicians who constantly try to make this about race. IT%u2019S NOT ABOUT RACE! It%u2019s about the connection to a governor we all know is a crook.
01/07/2009 11:14AM
Transparency: Change
It is transparent that we will change our decisions as we go along: We will not seat anyone appointed by Blago...Change: We changed our minds, we'll consider it, it takes too long to do the right thing!
01/07/2009 11:14AM
IT PISSES ME OFF . . .
That many of the black leaders in this country continue to make race the front and center issue. Racism in America will never be part of our past with the attitudes and sound bites of so many of todays black leaders . . . Sharpten, Jackson, and perhaps most nausiating . . . Bobbie Rush.
01/07/2009 11:17AM
Republican
No, now I'll vote Democrat, wait, I think I see change: Never mind, they're from Illinois!
01/07/2009 11:17AM
Jackie you are wrong!
Race has nothing to do with the seating of Burris. It is another bungled BLOWGO attempt at getting back at the people of IL. The Dems are upset as Roland is a Republican and that's that. Not race, sex, religion. WAKE UP!
01/07/2009 11:22AM
Desperate Man...Jan 7
You can't blame the man, this is the only way he can get a political appointment! He'll be laughing al the way to the F%@! bank!
01/07/2009 11:24AM
Its about the law...Jan 7
"If Blago had not been arrested" BUT HE WAS!
01/07/2009 11:32AM
Who's to blame? Jan 7
Patrick Fiztgerald for making Blago look like a corrupted gov. and making the people think twice about his decision! President elect realized that, now he is putting all the responsibility on the Senate! He did say he believes in change. Change of mind! Please!
01/07/2009 11:36AM
Is THIS what we pay TAXES for?
What would happen if the people of the State of Illinois, the citizens of Crook (oops I meant Cook) county and the City of Chicago (the city for sale to corporate interests and the city of fair game for developers) staged an across the board TAX REVOLT? That's right...EVERYBODY IGNORE YOUR STATE AND CITY TAXES!! Don't pay these people for a abd product!! We have a RIGHT to do this! I'm sure very few people like the way the state is run. Same thing goes for Crook (oops ,sorry Cook ) county and Da city. If we did our job badly we wouldn't be paid ,we'd get fired. I say :FIRE 'EM and DON'T PAY A CENT UNTIL WE GET SOMEONE HONEST AND INTELLIGENT!! We could do it! If we had the resolve and the guts.....but we don't now do we?
01/07/2009 12:01PM
I will not support anyone appointed by Blago!
Obama's stand after Blago's arrest. Now: I will work with Burris he is a fine man, from my home state! Mr. Obama, he was appointed by Blagojavich!
01/07/2009 12:05PM
I'm losing track: Mr. President Elect, you promised change!
You promised change, but you did not say that included changing your position on issues...First sing: Burris support, you said NO, Now you say, Yes? O.K. that's what you meant when you said "Change"

Mr. Burris should be seated. You cannot condemn one man for something you think another person has been accused of doing - noted that the Governor has been accused of a number of things - all hear-say - nothing has been proven or even put forth as evidence - yet you want to punish someone else - this is wrong. Jessie White's job is not to make a judgement on the governor's decisions - his job is simply to acknowledge, by his signature that it was/is the governor's decision, anything else is personal and has no place in doing his elected job.

Mr Voter
burris is a buffoon, i'd rather have gov. blowme in as a sen. then burris.....remeber the nicarole case they told AG burris that cruz did not do it , then after 15 years in prison he is free from dna and dugan has confessed to the crime...more how much business this hack has got from the state, how much has he "donated" to gov. blowme in the last five years....change....this old hack that blago pulled is nothing more then to take the lite off of him, he has that old racist gangbanger rush rambling like he's on dope, rush should worry more about the gangs and poor in his hood...just another day of corrpution in ILL. guess the dem's will lose this seat cause burris couldn't get a vote if he voted for himsrlf, he would touch the wrong srceen.....rep's get anyone but birkett and you have a winner!

MouseMan
Boy there's a lot of comments now that the "Burris Circus" is in full swing. I just wonder where we all were months and years ago when we could have stopped this thing dead? We could've voted any of the #%@$heads out, voted for the constitutional convention, or presured Madigan et al to vote in the recall provision. But there was no outrage 'till now. Well we got exactly what we deserved. Roland Burris, even though he's a taco short of a combo plate, is our new Senator. He'll be able to carve that on his little tomb on the southside, as well as collect a Senatorial pension for his and his wife's lifetime, even if he dosen't run again. Rod the Mod, even though under arrest, was within the legal auspices of his job to appoint who he wants regardless how slimy or illogical it is. And even though we don't agree. The Democratic chowderheads that control EVERY SINGLE elected offce in this state (not to mention Chicago & Cook county)got exactly what they wanted. And don't believe that either Daley or Obama couldn't have stopped this with a wave of their regal hands, but deigned not to. And don't even get me strted on Durbin. Remember, Bush isn't out of office yet, and still could pardon Ryan as Durbin/Thompson want him to, can't have George talkin' 'ya know. Oh well, I'm sure it'll all change when Daddy gets Lisa Madigan into the Govenor's mansion.......right???
01/07/2009 1:16PM
DD
You are very correct Dom, you people from Illinois look like a bunch of drama kings and clowns!!!!
01/07/2009 1:21PM
Mr Voter
mouseman the ugly prom queen without a date ( lisa m. ) will getin cause daddy didnot get her the pony when she was 10.....burris the buffoon is a side show all to himself, hope they grill him at the impeachment hearings of how much business he did with the staate and how much he "donated" to gov. blowme....notice how quiet daley is but this sneak thief is moving while the lite is on the other rats, next thing you know daley will be selling our houses....looks like the rep's will pick up one sen. seat unless they run that clown birkett.....
01/07/2009 1:30PM
DON'T PAY FOR CORRUPTION!
Don't pay your taxes, I'm with you on this one! But they have the power, we'll just accumulate late fines, and penalties. That's why politicians have it made, they pay check is guarateed regardless of productivity!
01/07/2009 1:30PM
former Chicagoan
Seat Burris! He will be one of the better members of the Senate. Also, he should be allowed to run for reelection. He's certainly way better than Ted Stevens, 85, who ran while indicted. Fortunately, he lost. I don't think the racial angle is sinificant, but it does not look good if the Senate makes such a fuss over a well-respected, experienced black guy.
01/07/2009 1:32PM
Mr Mean
...why don't burris rebut all the racist crap that the herion head bobby rush says....
01/07/2009 1:44PM
Re:former Chicagoan
easy for you to say, you flew the cuckoo's nest! "He will be one of the better memeber os the Senate?" What crystal ball are you reading?
01/07/2009 1:48PM
Mr. Mean
Well said! Only one on heroin or crack or Helium can believe in Blago's appointee! But wait, he is qualified, he would be the only black senator!
01/07/2009 2:35PM
Joe Blow
They need to MAKE buris put ALL his dealing with blago on the table and see the money trail, how much state business, how much did he "donate".....wait...this is ILL. never mind burris bought this seat for a bargin rate price, bet also he has obama earfor a pardon after obama re-elected....watch...and ryan gets out soon too! aaahhh the good old boys club
01/07/2009 2:35PM
Burris goes to Washington
But he was sent back in the rain, He called Blago to complain, demanding a refund, Blago complied, "I gave it to Durbin" Go back in tomorrow, and he'll explain. End of story

This is the sneakiest way to get into the Senate...
He couldn't get elected so this was the only way. Blago, you must really hate Illinois. There is no love in your heart for Illinois.
01/07/2009 4:57PM
Burris is a JOKE!
I am totally against Burris as Senator. He is incompetent. There should have been a special election.
01/07/2009 5:25PM

Didn't my man Burris vigorously prosecute an innocent man a few years ago? That kind of screwed up behavior is inexcusable! This man belongs in jail - not in the senate!

Race Card
The race card ended with the election of our new President. Or did they idiot Rush forget that too. We are now going to seat a Senator that could not beat BLAGO for Governor. COme on Illinois Senators and Reps. get your heads out of your _____, and impeach this knuckle head that is destroying the State of Illinois.
01/07/2009 6:55PM
Miss Something
Did I miss something or did future Senator Burris admit in a press conference that both he and the firm that he works for make contributions to the Friends of Blago. Was this done so that he could obtain lucrative state grants for his firm?????? Why is the media not covering this???? Is this not Pay to Play?????
01/07/2009 7:37PM
Burris is a load of HOT AIR
The other night I saw Burris on TV. Never have i heard a man speak so much and say so little. EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED .......NOT!
01/07/2009 9:12PM
Yes its all about Race
You have to be kidding me. Its all about race. Blago knew good and well he was basically going to get his way by appointing an African American. He got all the Rev's, Churches, Black Caucus and others that say to let Burris on the floor and be a Senator. It now by default is considered "Racist" when someone suggests following what should be done. Even good 'ol Burris is playing his race card, I frankly didn't think he would - too bad. If he would have appointed a White Male the guy would have been locked out - we all know it. Blago won!!! He got the last laugh. Vote EVERYONE out of office and start over in Chicagoland. There is a six or so County area that makes the rest of us look like idiots in Illinois. Once again we live in the "State of Chicago."
