Pedestrian Dies on I-57



POSEN--A man who was trying to cross I-57 New Year's night was struck and killed by an SUV.

At 5:25 p.m., Lawrence Ulmenstine was attempting to cross I-57 near Sibley Boulevard when he was struck by a Jeep Cherokee in the far left northbound lane of the expressway, according to Illinois State Police District Chicago Master Sgt. Rene Benavidez.

Ulmenstine, 47, of South Harrison Ave. in Posen, was pronounced dead on the scene, the Cook County Medical Examiner said.

The female driver of the Cherokee, who pulled over immediately after the crash, was not injured and was not issued any citations.

It is not clear why he was trying to cross the expressway or ifh had left a vehicle nearby.
