CHICAGO (STNG) -- A fish and chicken fast food restaurant on the Far South Side was shut down Tuesday after Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) inspectors found no hot running water, no certified food manager on duty and other health violations.
According to a release from the CDPH, JJ Fish and Chicken, 11858 S. State, was ordered closed Tuesday following an inspection that was triggered by a customer complaint. The customer called 311 to complain of becoming ill after eating chicken gizzards that were allegedly green on the inside, according to a CDPH release. No evidence of spoiled food was found Tuesday by CDPH inspectors.
The restaurant also was cited for a poorly maintained outside garbage container, an exit door with gaps that allow access to rodents and insects, and a broken three-compartment sink (water leaking from one compartment to the next).
The enforcement action was the 247th time in 2008 that Health Department inspectors have shut a food establishment for violations of the Chicago Health Code, the release said. Representatives of JJ Fish & Chicken will have to explain themselves at an administrative hearing on February 5, 2009 and pay fines expected to total $2,500.
Chicagoans who believe that a restaurant or any other licensed food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to report it by calling 311.
