Daley Defends Snow Ops Amid Complaints

COMMENT ON THIS STORY

CHICAGO (WBBM)
- Mayor Richard M. Daley is defending the city's scaled back snow-clearing operations on Chicago's side streets, even as complaints are growing.

Several Aldermen and residents across the city are grumbling that snow--and more importantly ice--still haven't been removed from their neighborhoods.

The Daley Administration has said--as a cost-cutting measure--it's clearing side streets without incurring overtime.

Mayor Daley also acknowledges the city is using less salt on Chicago's 3,300 miles of side streets as well.

He says the city can no longer afford to work the crews outside of regular hours for light snowfalls. He adds the city is responding to complaints called into the 311 non-emergency help line.

But, some residents--and aldermen--say those 311 calls haven't been answered often or well enough.
