CTA Rape Suspect Surrenders

CHICAGO ― A suspect in the rape of a woman at a CTA Red Line platform in November on the Near North Side turned himself in Thursday but has not been charged because the victim reportedly does not want to pursue the case.

The victim was waiting for a train on the CTA Platform at 1599 N. Clybourn at about 3 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, according to Belmont Area detectives. The offender approached her from behind and took her cell phone, telling her he would return the phone in exchange for sexual favors. The victim was then raped and the suspect returned the phone as he fled.

The suspect turned himself in Thursday to the Chicago Police station at Belmont and Western avenues, 2452 W. Belmont Ave., but was later released without being charged because the victim did not want to cooperate in pursuing the case at this time, a Belmont Area detective said late Friday morning.

The attacker was initially described as a black male in his late 20s or early 30s, 5-foot-10 with a slim build and a missing front tooth. He has very short hair, brown eyes and a medium complexion.

Police had released a video surveillance photo of the suspect and urged anyone recognizing the photo or having information to contact the Belmont Area Homicide/Gang Crime/Sex Unit.
