Flu Shot Should Top 'To Do' List

CHICAGO -- The head of the Illinois Department of Aging (IDOA) is urging all Illinoisans over the age of 50 to get a flu shot in anticipation of winter.

The flu season usually runs from November until April.

IDOA Director Charles Johnson says on top of a winter “To Do” list seniors should get a flu shot to protect against the flu, formally called influenza.

Some further steps seniors can do to protect themselves from getting sick during winter are keeping their thermostats above 65 degrees, and making sure their furnace is working properly.

Seniors often lower their thermostats to reduce heating bills but risk developing hypothermia.

Also, seniors should check their furnace to make sure it is in good shape and heating ducts are properly ventilated.

Seniors, disabled people and families with small children who can’t pay their heating bills should apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.
