CHICAGO (WBBM) -- Aldermen have given preliminary approval to an ordinance that would ban the sale or possession of tiny plastic bags often used by drug dealers.
WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports the City Council Health Committee has okayed the measure
The bags are two-inch, sealable, plastic and stamped with little logos, like hearts, spiders or superhero symbols. And 2nd Ward Alderman Bob Fioretti says, in his area, they’re used to hold crack cocaine and heroin. Many are decorated with little logos that police say identify the kind of drugs contained within.
One Alderman previously questioned suggested some of the bags have a legitimate use, like holding extra buttons for clothing. But, Fioretti says it’s clear what the ones found strewn across city parks are used for, and the Council must do what it can to thwart the users.
10/15/2008 10:58AM
Unfreaking believable
So the dart supplies I have on me (flights, shafts, etc.) that are sold in these bags will now get me in trouble in Chicago? Get a life you freakin' morons (and a brain while you're at it).
10/15/2008 11:04AM
Logan
So, all clothing sold in the city limits with extra buttons in the little attached bag will now be illegal? And all jewelers will have to put small items of jewelry and chains into, what, wax paper bags? This is IDIOCY. Do the aldermen have nothing todo, so now they're making it up as they go along???
10/15/2008 11:06AM
Way To Go Stupid!
Can't stop the flow of drugs? Well by golly we'll stop the flow of the bags!
10/15/2008 11:07AM
Absolute Idiots
Hi
Where do they come up with this stuff? Simply prosecute the drug dealers on the streets. It would be nice if the police did things correctly, so that criminals do not have crazy lawsuits with the police department. Honestly, this entire city council needs to go. They are an absolute waste of time, energy, and tax dollars.
10/15/2008 11:29AM
Stop wasting our tax money
I think it's a waste of time. They eliminated rolling papers once and you can still find them at some store that sell cigarettes.
10/15/2008 11:39AM
MouseMan
Hey, common' give the city council a break here. I mean, just look how well the spray paint ban eliminated graffiti. Oh yeah, wait......
10/15/2008 12:11PM
Demand and Supply
Want to cut back on drug use, tax it like beer. Yeah, we still have beer, but it's not as glamorous as illegal drugs. And the money saved by not wasting our time and money trying to enforce drug laws can go to rehab. Rehab will NEVER cost as much asthe drug enforcement is costing us, even if we treat people who never had drugs. Honestly, why do studies on these things if we aren't going to do anything with the information?
10/15/2008 12:24PM
Chicago Is My Babysitter
Chicago is my babysitter.
10/15/2008 12:43PM
DUH!!!
Hell hath no fury like MORONS IN CHARGE!!
10/15/2008 12:44PM
Tax the Bags!
Wait....tax the bags like everything else in Chicago !
10/15/2008 12:50PM
Dumb and dumber
A new definition of stupid has been reached. It may be dumb to take drugs but the city council has you covered. Removing baggies from only Chicago stores will fix the problem. Yes sir another first in the nation. They would be better off taxing the little guys to bring in the money needed to balance the budget. Oh well it will able be better after the elections when we get fresh blood.
10/15/2008 12:58PM
Heroine?
I don't think heroines are often sold in plastic bags. Isn't there a law about selling people? On the other hand, I have seen heroin sold in plastic bags.
10/15/2008 1:49PM
Hey Fioretti here are 2 better ideas
1) go after the druggies and dealers and 2) instead of wasting time on banning tiny baggies, WHY DON'T YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE CONSTANT PARKING BANS IN THE SOUTH LOOP?? EVERY FRIGGIN' WEEK FOR A MONTH AT A TIME THERE IS NO PARKING OVERNIGHT, NO PARKING DURING THE DAY. WHY DON'T YOU SOLVE THAT PROBLEM?? YOU ARE AN IDIOT!
10/15/2008 1:56PM
Chicago Council = IQ of a dart
Liquor is sold in brown bags, let's eliminate those too. Get the drug dealers council!!
10/15/2008 2:23PM
Black market
Don't they realize that this is going to create a black market for little bags in the city. Drug dealers are going to go to Indiana and buy bags. Soon the bags will be more expensive than the drugs
10/15/2008 2:24PM
What a waste of time
Just bust the dealers, stop wasting our taxes
10/15/2008 2:26PM
jail the coin collectors
Those little bags were designed to protect granpa's and grandson coin collection. They'll have lots fun in jail.
10/15/2008 2:26PM
Humor
Chicago continues to prove that it has a sense of humor. Good job voting these guys in, eh?
10/15/2008 2:26PM
money
this in no way will stop drug use, but it would inface increase revenues for the simple charge of owning one of the bags you have to pay court fees etc and if you catch someone with the bag and drugs theres 2 charges longer jail time
10/15/2008 2:27PM
philly
My heroine won't fit in one of those little baggies.
10/15/2008 2:29PM
when is a ridiculous solution better than no solution?
So, since murders have been committed with hammers, screwdrivers and box cutters, you should illegalize those as well? What kind of twisted thinking is this? Bags don't sell drugs; pushers sell drugs. Cute bags just make them more attractive. What will this accomplish? Nothing positive. And you're getting paid for thinking up this nonsense?
10/15/2008 2:33PM
Me
looks like it will be back to putting my drugs in the homemade envelopes
10/15/2008 2:47PM
Dumbfarts
Ziploc bags are contraband? lets shut down EVRY FREAKEN STORE in the city!!!!!!
10/15/2008 2:50PM
try this
Make drug dealing illegal. This is just the typical reaction from Chicago, is there ever a ban the counsel didn't like?
10/15/2008 2:52PM
So... buttons?
Does that mean that clothing sold with buttons attached in little plastic bags would be against the law?
Good. I never could stand manufacturers thinking about the happiness of their customers!
10/15/2008 2:56PM
A Modest Proposal
This is a fantastic idea. While we're at it, let's ban cars and airplanes since terrorists use them.
10/15/2008 2:59PM
Button Bags
There will soon be a rash of button bags stolen from clothing by drug dealers to put their drugs in, and by comic book writers, to stuff their heroines in.
10/15/2008 3:04PM
waste
What a waste of taxpayer $$$.. These people who think of this stuff live in la-la land.. They can all bend over & touch their toes & kiss their butts GOOD BY..
10/15/2008 3:08PM
My dealer doesn't even use 'em
My dealer puts my cocaine in folded up paper and then ties plastic around it. He doesn't use little ziplocks. Lol
10/15/2008 3:09PM
my god!
Read the article closely! Forget drugs, people are running around with 2-inch heroines in plastic bags! We're looking at a heroine-suffocation holocaust.
Proofread your work idiot. Spellchecker is not the end-all-be-all.
10/15/2008 3:09PM
Just Like Costco or Sams
I guess I'll just have to buy my drugs in the gallon sized freezer bags, hey just like Costco :D
10/15/2008 3:09PM
But the Bead Lady does
Oh! But I just remembered! The lady who sells earrings and beads down the street DOES use them. Hmmm...
10/15/2008 3:13PM
Chicago exists
to make Californians feel better about all of our ridiculous laws. Chicago's got us beat by a mile when it comes to silly liberalism. Plus the city is crappy and the weather sucks.
10/15/2008 3:24PM
My kinda town
Alderman... code for "community organizer"
10/15/2008 3:27PM
Wow!
Just think of the big bucks these people are drawing from the taxpayers.
If anyone of them had a brain you could take it, shove it up a bugs butt & it would rattle like a BB in a boxcar..
10/15/2008 3:32PM
Mikey Mike
I say let 'em be sold. Drugs is Ok
10/15/2008 3:34PM
Black Mtn Man
Chitcago...what a bunch of freaking morons. How long are you people going to put up with the idiots running your city?
10/15/2008 3:36PM
Ex Drug Dealer
THAT WONT STOP EM!
10/15/2008 3:42PM
Really???
Really? I mean....really????
Oh well, this is the time to invent "Small Sandwich Bags"...
But seriously....
Really??
10/15/2008 3:49PM
I don't understand...
you don't think banning baggies will stop drug sales but you do think banning guns will stop violent crime. The concept is exactly the same.
10/15/2008 3:54PM
you did this to yourselves
if only people didnt litter...
10/15/2008 3:55PM
Mr. Glad Bag
Hey dealers, the corners of my regular sandwich baggies work just as good as any little Ziploc. They'll never ban me either because the kids will always need something to put their PB&J's in.
Mr. Glad Bag
10/15/2008 4:21PM
bewildered
more whining, and wasted tax money..
10/15/2008 4:28PM
Try and fail
They tried to ban foie gras, spray paint, and a few other things. The result, people would go across city limits and buy the same thing. People are doing the same thing to avoid that ridiculous tax.
10/15/2008 4:40PM
brilliant!
My drugs come in plastic sandwich baggies. Should THOSE be eliminated, also?
10/15/2008 4:41PM
just think
if you don't think that the olympic committee doesn't follow the news here than the chicago machine should think twice.
i wonder what they are going to think about the screwballs that are running this city & COUNTY.
10/15/2008 4:46PM
fookin idiots!
are you freaking kidding me? its called saran wrap and foil...its even cheaper!! you just saved your local drug dealer some money! yay profit!
10/15/2008 4:49PM
sure they are drug bags
and I never use them to keep beads and jewelry findings separate
Morons....
10/15/2008 5:12PM
little bags are the bomb!
in my radio controlled flying club we have monthly raffles, generally included in these raffles are bundles of these 2" x 2" bags. We use them for all the hundreds of tiny parts associated with model airplane flight. Not everyone who possesses these bags are committing criminal acts. Be better to enforce a label claiming that use inconsistant with Federal Laws is punishable by a fine and/or imprisonment. Place the warning label on it in 3-5 different languages. Then most everyone would be happy.
10/15/2008 5:26PM
More Chicago Idiocy
No wonder the rest of the nation is starting to hate Chicago and the Chief a-hole, Dick Daley.
10/15/2008 5:33PM
Ban Sh1tcago
Nothing good has come from your city since I can remeber. You have banned guns, people still get shot! You have banned all forms of self defence, people who fight back go to jail now. I will never be in chicago again. Ya'll can keep it! Good luck with you bags!
10/15/2008 5:44PM
legalize bags
if you make bags a crime only criminals will have bags
10/15/2008 6:02PM
hah
i'll just have to use big bags from now on. oh darn.
10/15/2008 6:19PM
exchitown
Alderpersons have never been famous for brains. Are they now taking stupid pills?
10/15/2008 6:27PM
Recycle!
Please save and return all of your mini-baggies to your dealer when empty!
Thank You Morons!
10/15/2008 6:27PM
born in Chicago
LOL, this sounds like a useful piece of legislation. Banning things by law is somewhat contradictory of basic Constitutional principles. So this guy thinks putting another ban on these bags will have any relevant impact on the Chicago drug trade?
10/15/2008 6:29PM
Tweet!
I <3 8008135!
10/15/2008 6:33PM
Check your water!
Inbreeding and lead in the food chain can cause mental problems similar to what this ban exposes in these people!
10/15/2008 6:33PM
No bag? Oh yeah, they'll quit...
Well, there you go. I know for a fact that if people can't get their dope in a little cute bag, they'll surely quit.
This is a huge road block to dealers too.
Watch out pusher-man, your days as numbered!
Get a clue, guys!
No wonder our proactive and super intelligent elected officials make the big bucks. They are idea men.
How about getting f'ing real Fioretti and crew.
I'm sorry to say you're my alderman. I am happy to say that I did NOT vote for you and never will.
10/15/2008 6:36PM
mommie! daddy! save me!
what morons will think of when they try to protect us...
better to be responsible for yourself...
10/15/2008 6:40PM
Watch out! I have a brain!
The most dangerous weapon of mass destruction!
And I know how to use it!
10/15/2008 6:41PM
This just in!
Many drugs require the use of fire to use. Chicago is expected to ban fire shortly.
10/15/2008 6:43PM
Amazing
Sure glad they've got those Budget problems solved so they had time to do this.
10/15/2008 6:57PM
Money and Power
This isn't about ending drugs, it is about arresting and convicting people of drug USE (The drug users), NOT the suppliers of the drugs (The Kingpins).
For every person arrested, they become income to the state.
Housing, food, "treatment", security forces, etc. all put money in someones pocket.
If half the money was spent on EDUCATION and ASSISTANCE, then the user source would dry up.
But then someone would loose income from the loss of sales of the drugs.
Which also points out that those enforcing the current policy also are working hand in hand with the drug suppliers.
IF you want a change, stop voting DEMocrap or REPublicrap, go independent!
But remember, these criminals in office need to be arrested and convicted of their crimes too!
10/15/2008 7:14PM
test tease!
grow a pair!
10/15/2008 7:20PM
everything is beautiful!
When you are insane!
10/15/2008 7:21PM
jz
Remember when the feds discontinued the $1000 bill to make it hard to buy drugs? Banning little baggies to do the same should be equally successful.
10/15/2008 7:26PM
eminent domain
the govment takes yo sh!t an sells it ta sum wite mofo...
10/15/2008 7:40PM
JoeBlowLuvaMain
its a way for cops to bust people with just a bag as parafernailya. people round here just cut out a corner of regular bags and tie it up.
10/15/2008 8:25PM
fried brain surprise!
Makes me wonder what they have been smokin!
10/15/2008 9:46PM
Asinine
Why would you get rid of the things that make it easy to identify drug dealers?
10/15/2008 10:57PM
what's next?
It makes no sense to ban something which has dozens of alternatives: plastic straws, envelopes, balloons, condoms, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, plastic sample vials, and tissue paper would all work fine. I'd like to see them try to ban these things too. LOL
10/15/2008 11:08PM
um..... what?
so... does this mean that the next thing to be outlawed will be the cellophane on cigaret packs and gum wrappers? those hold drugs pritty well.
10/16/2008 12:08AM
a step in the right direction...
...reducing our dependency on foreign oil one teeny cellophane bag at a time
10/16/2008 1:23AM
just say no
I've read through these comments, and I'm in firm agreement with everyone else here. This is colossally stupid.
The key question: what drugs were they doing when they passed this? There's a reason it's called "dope", Aldermen...
10/16/2008 3:49AM
actually
The useful thing this does is give cops a reason to search people who might have drugs, making it more difficult for dealers to hide. I can only hope they use it for tracking and don't actually plan on eliminating the bags...
10/16/2008 4:04AM
Good thing I don't live in Chicago
I'd be a criminal. I have hundreds of these bags holding craft supplies, electronic parts, little screws for computers, state quarters, small game pieces, and just about everything else that will fit in them. Everything but drugs.
10/16/2008 5:27AM
Plastic Bags in Mayor's Household?
Considering everything we've read over the years about Mayor Daley's children being active drug users and rave attenders, he probably got the idea after having the maid clean out their rooms.
10/16/2008 5:43AM
Brilliant
Eliminates the money no cash no seller no buyers, you dumb
10/16/2008 6:24AM
the rest of the world....
....is laughing at you!!!, this is just idiotic, I have LOTS of these bags, I get them when I purchase watch parts...this is the same reasoning that making guns illegal for law abiding citizens will stop criminals from committing gun crime. so whats nextwill you stop the scourge of car accidents by making cars illegal? maybe a $10/gal tax on gas?.. uh oh, I may have just given these ding-dongs an idea...
10/16/2008 6:47AM
Mayor Dickface Daley
You slobs just better shut up or I'll have my thugs (police) beat you like a female bartender on a friday nite, So just vote for me Little Richie King of Kings in the City of Corruption called Chicago....A bribe a day keeps the building inspector away. just toss the cash over the fence I don't want trouble with the Feds.
10/16/2008 8:05AM
Vote for me in 2011!
It's nonsense like this that has driven me to run for Alderman for my ward in 2011 (the next election cycle). That insane foie gras ban passed UNANIMOUSLY, which meant that not a single alderman in our whole damned city had the guts or brains to speak up against an idiotic law. I'm glad that at least one alderman went on record being against this particular idiocy, but there aren't enough smart, decent ones to counteract the moronic majority.
10/16/2008 8:08AM
Wow
It's been a while since I heard anything that silly. These idiots are a complete waste of money. Seriously, I can only hope they read these comments - what fools!
10/16/2008 8:32AM
Stupid
This is what I would expect from the city that's given us Obama.
10/16/2008 9:39AM
Ban Money
Money is used to buy drugs. So, if Chicago Bans money no more drugs! Viola!
10/16/2008 11:26AM
chicagoan?
And we facing the prospect of placing a Chicagoan in the white house??? What will he ban besides common sense?
10/16/2008 11:31AM
Glad I Don't Live There
I thought NYC was bad, but this takes the cake. Can't wait to see what Leno and Letterman have to say 'bout this. Bunch of dumb liberal democratic
aholes. Another example of government knowing what is best for us.
10/16/2008 2:39PM
Just where did common sense go to anyway
Oh yes cause they cannot find replacements for the little bags or OH say buy them from outside the state or on the internet since they do have real uses like jewelry sales and other things and OH thats right a glad sandwich bag cannot possibly serve the same purpose or say little bottles or even an origami envelope...
10/16/2008 4:43PM
Brilliant
They had better make lighters and matches illegal next.
10/16/2008 10:04PM
foie gras?
I was on Leave last summer in Paris and ate Foie Gras. Absolutely DEEEE-LICIOUS! Can hardly wait until I have it again with my ole friends back in Paris in May.
10/16/2008 10:57PM
Hey dickwads!
You liberal Chicagoans keep voting in these loonies!
Next time vote for an independent!
Oh ya! The Islamic contingent owes the libs big time for all the favors given to them!
Funny how Islam attacks America, and then we pay to bring MORE over here...
10/19/2008 1:28AM
A Heathen View From a Southern Illinois Hillbilly
I know most of you folks in the city think we downstate folks are gun packing, Whiskey drinking Hillbillies, but I gotta tell ya,, We sure get a kick out of watching your liberals do silly things like this. If you don't mind, I would like to make a heathen comment: HELLO !! As Long as You Folks Keep Blaming Crime On Inanimate Objects You will never resolve your crime issues. LOL.
Yours Truly,
A Southern Illinois Hillbilly
10/19/2008 4:49PM
Just like the gun ban
What an excellent city council! Just as the handgun ban prevents any illegal guns from being in Chicago, and makes it SUCH a safe place; so a baggie ban will prevent anyone from importing them from the 'burbs. Therefore: ban the baggies, end the illegal drugs. I mean, the gun ban worked, didn't it? What? you mean we have higher crime than places that DO allow armed citizens? Well... maybe the baggie idea is stupid also
