Westside School Evacuated After Smelling Gas

CHICAGO (STNG)  -- Students at a West Side school were evacuated Thursday morning after a smell of gas prompted a HazMat response.

A Level 1 HazMat was called about 11 a.m. at the Plato School, 5549 W. Harrison St., according to Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado.

Crews were called to the school after a smell of gas was reported in the basement.

The HazMat was secured at 11:21 a.m., Rosado said.

All children were evacuated as a precaution but were expected to be let back into the school about 11:45 a.m., Rosado said.

The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church is listed at the address, according to a Web directory.
