SPRINGFIELD (IRN) - A measure to ban 50-caliber rifles in Illinois has passed the Senate’s Public Health Committee.
Bill sponsor Senator Dan Kotowski (D-Park Ridge) says the large, sniper rifles could be used by terrorists to damage fuel storage tanks, a radar dish, a power plant, or an airplane from up to a mile-and-a-half away. He says that’s too much of a risk.
But Senator Christine Rodogno (R-Lemont) is concerned that because the ban would outlaw the manufacture and sale of the rifles, jobs could be lost at Illinois gun makers’ operations.
Todd Vandermyde of the state’s branch of the National Rifle Association says must 50-calibler rifle owners use the weapons for competition or big-game hunting in Western states. He says he’s never seen confirmation that the U-S considers the rifles to be a favorite of terrorists.
