CHICAGO (WBBM Newsradio 780) -- Organizers of the May 1 immigration rally in downtown Chicago are hoping for a far bigger crowd than the 100,000 people who attended on March 20th.
Organizer Claudio Gaete Tapia with the coalition of African Asian, European and Latino Immigrants said he hopes the rally might draw as many as a half million people to show solidarity in the face of congressional plans to refashion immigration laws.
Organizers presented representatives from several communities including Polish, Irish, Filipino, African American, Muslim, Asian and Hispanic to show that this is an immigrant issue, not exclusively an Hispanic issue.
Asked where participants recommend the line be drawn between no immigration at all and absolutely unrestricted immigration, Gaete Tapia said that has yet to be determined. He said the purpose of the immigration rally is to demonstrate solidarity and open a dialogue as equals, not subordinates over the shape of immigration legislation to come.
