Students/Schools/Police Combine to Fight Crime

CHICAGO --   A pilot program is being run in 10 Chicago Public Schools this year that allows students to send crime tips to police via text message.

The tips will be anonymous and will be routed to either Chicago, state or federal law enforcement agencies depending on their nature.

All text messages must begin with CPD, followed by the message.

At a news conference Monday at Dyett High School on East 51st Street, CPS CEO Arne Duncan, Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis and other leaders talked about efforts currently underway to improve student safety.

More police patrols are being conducted at targeted schools, there are new and improved security cameras at more CPS schools and a peer-jury program has been expanded which gives students more responsibility for their own safety.
