Teen ATV Driver Dies in Flip

INGLESIDE-- A 16-year-old all-terrain vehicle driver was killed Sunday afternoon after his ATV flipped on top of him.

Joseph Cardella, of 25605 W Old Grand Ave., was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 3:15 p.m., the Cook County Medical Examiner said.

He was driving the ATV in an open area near his home when he attempted to jump a dirt hill with the vehicle, said Tom Preidis, Assistant Chief of the Fox Lake Fire Department.

As he was jumping the hill, the vehicle nose-dived, with the ATV ultimately rolling, Preidis said.

When emergency crews arrived, the boy was in serious condition and a Flight for Life helicopter took him to Lutheran General where he died, Preidis said.

Other teens were in the area at the time of the accident, but he was the only one on the vehicle.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident, but would not comment Sunday night.

An autopsy for Cardella is scheduled
