Bodies of Couple Recovered in Gompers Park

CHICAGO -- Police say the bodies of a man and woman were found Sunday morning in the Gompers Park area. They were reported missing Friday morning after the man detailed a suicide pact to his mother.

Anthony Mitola, along with his ex-wife Veronica Bonnilla, 41, were last seen about 11:39 a.m. Friday in the 4900 block of North Kildare in the Far North Side's Irving Park neighborhood, according to a Grand Central Area detective.

Police said Mitola wrote a letter to his mother stating that he and Bonnilla were depressed and were going to commit suicide together in the Gompers Park area in the 4400 block of West Foster Avenue.

The bodies were found in Gompers Park Sunday by Albany Park District police and Grand Central Area Special Victims Unit detectives, who had been searching for the two since Saturday, according to a detective.

An Albany Park District police lieutenant confirmed the bodies were found and said officers remained at the scene at 12:15 p.m.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office has not been notified of the fatalities as of 12:30 p.m.

Mitola had six herniated discs in his back and had other physical disabilities, according to police. He left behind his cars and wallet, including his state identification and his money.

Police had issued a missing persons alert Sunday morning asking for the public’s help in finding the two.
