ORTON WINS THE COMPETITION
With exactly 21 days before the regular season opener against the Colts in Indianapolis, Kyle Orton was named the Bears starting quarterback.
“I’m real excited,” said Orton. “This is obviously one of my goals going into the season. As a team we have a lot of goals to accomplish and this is just the start of it.”
Orton picks up where he left off in 2007. With 15 starts as a 2005 rookie, then none until the final three=2 0games of last season, Orton has become a stronger and smarter quarterback. His next step is to establish himself as the leader of the offense.
“It’s obviously not going to happen overnight.”
It needs to happen over the next three weeks.
Teammates respect Orton for how he’s gone about his job since the week of the Super Bowl in 2006. It was that week of practice in Miami that Orton decided to change the course of his career.
He played Peyton Manning that week, and in three weeks will try to beat Manning and the Colts.
Offensive coordinator Ron Turner said the decision was difficult to make. It's also a decision Grossman no doubt finds difficult to stomach.
"He's a competitor, " Turner said. "He wanted to be the guy, but he's also a team guy and he'll do whatever he can to help this team win and be ready to go when his time comes.
INJURIES
Tight end Desmond Clark has a right knee sprain that could sideline him for a couple of weeks. He still could be ready for the season opener. DE Mark Anderson(wrist), LB Nick Roach(concussion), T Kirk Barton(right knee) were among the missing Bears in Monday’s practice. Safety Brandon McGowan(ankle) returned to practice.
Due to a major snow storm expecting to pummel the east coast the Chicago Bears game against the Baltimore Ravens has been changed to a 3:15 P.M. C.T. kick off.
Chicago Bears wide receiver Devin Hester says he's sure there will be plenty of changes next season after a third straight year out of the playoffs.
