CHICAGO -- Ann DeWaters, a Rockford woman doing volunteer work at the Olympics in Beijing died after falling into an open manhole on the street in the city on Aug. 4.
Ann DeWaters graduated from high school in far northern Rockford and her mother lives in Chicago, according to Rich Carter, spokesman for U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo (R-Egan).
DeWaters was walking to her hotel in Beijing when she fell in an open manhole and died, Carter said. She interned for Rep. Manzullo’s Washington office in 2006 and has since been working with a variety of humanitarian organizations, including Habitat for Humanity.
“Her whole life was based on public service,” Carter said.
The body of DeWaters, 25, was returned to the United States on Wednesday. Family members plan a memorial service.
