As Chicago Cop Sits In Jail, Officials Fume

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP)  -- Police and prosecutors in Illinois are asking Iowa Governor Chet Culver to pardon a Chicago officer sentenced to five years in prison for hitting a college student.

No one disputes that Michael Mette punched Jake Gothard fracturing his nose, cheek and jaw during an October 2005 altercation in Dubuque.

But his supporters say he only struck after Gothard pushed him three times.

Mette was found guilty of assault in November 2006 although the judge says he wasn't the initial aggressor.

Now, Cook County State's Attorney Richard Devine, Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis and others are seeking a pardon. Culver's office says the governor doesn't comment on ongoing legal proceedings.

Mette has appealed, and arguments before the Iowa Supreme Court are scheduled next month.
