Motorcyclist's Foot Severed In Forklift Crash

WOODRIDGE, Ill. (STNG)  -- A motorcyclist's foot was severed Wednesday morning when his cycle was struck by a forklift near a construction site off I-355 in southwest suburban Woodridge.

About 7:45 a.m., a front loader construction vehicle was carrying a forklift west on 63rd Street in Woodridge near the the entrance ramp to I-355, according to Woodridge police spokeswoman Carrie Noe.

The frontloader attempted to make a U-turn to get down to a construction crew on I-355 when the fork part of the forklift caught the side of a motorcycle that was eastbound on 63rd Street, Noe said. The motorcyclist's foot was severed as a result, she said.

The motorcyclist was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, where he was in surgery late Wednesday morning, Noe said.

One lane of 63rd Street was closed after the accident, causing significant backups since it happened during the morning rush, Noe said. As of about 11 a.m., 63rd Street was again open to traffic.

Citations will likely be issued as a result of the crash, she said, but police are still investigating and reconstructing the accident as of late Wednesday morning.
