CHICAGO (WBBM) - Being a pedestrian and trying to cross a street in Chicago can be a little like the old video game “Frogger”. You can be taking your life in your hands at any time.
A new study reportedly finds that, on average, every year 71 pedestrians are killed and more than 900 seriously hurt while crossing streets in Chicago.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports the North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center says that, between 2003 and 2005, the most dangerous intersection was at 79th and King Drive with a total of 13 pedestrians hit.
79th and King was followed by Ashland and 79th, California and North Avenue, Cicero and Madison and Pulaski and Irving Park.
The city says it’s looking at re-working lane markings, signage and traffic signal timing to make the worst intersections more safe for pedestrians.
To address the problem, the city is working on the three "E's"...engineering, education and enforcement.
Here's the list of the worst intersections. Numbers show total accidents involving pedestrians in 2003 and 2005.
