Woman's Face Burned By Caustic Liquid In Logan Square Robbery
A woman is facing plastic surgery after a robbery in the Logan Square neighborhood where two assailants threw caustic liquid in her face.
As CBS 2's Joanie Lum reports, the attack happened around 6:30 a.m. on Altgeld Street near Richmond Street. Police are searching for the two female offenders, one of whom neighbors say might be a child.
The woman suffered first and second degree burns to her face and upper body. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition.
The victim was trying to get into her car, when the two females approached and threw the liquid on her and her car. Hours later, the as-yet-unidentified substance was still on the inside driver's seat and the exterior of the vehicle, and on the ground.
Neighbors said a man going out for a jog saw everything.
"He saw a woman and a child – a 12-year-old child – walking, and they had coffee cups, and they came next to her and poured the liquid in her eyes, and took her bag," said neighbor Maria Cortez.
"Who would do something like that and expose a child to the crime?" added neighbor Carline Murillo. "It's very scary."
The woman screamed loudly, took off some of her clothes and ran back to her basement apartment, as neighbors called police. They say her eyes were shut when paramedics took her away.
The woman was seriously injured and will probably need plastic surgery, Shakespeare District police Capt. Marc Buslik said.
A surveillance camera at an apartment building nearby captured images Monday morning. The building manager declined to release the tape, but did show it to CBS 2 News.
The video shows three people exiting a sport-utility vehicle and running down the street toward the scene at 6:30 a.m., and then the people run back to the vehicle and it pulls away.
Police have been alerted to the video.
