Cash-For-Guns Turn-In This Weekend

CHICAGO (CBS 2) ― Local leaders are asking Chicagoans to turn in their guns. They're hoping for a big turn out at the city's latest gun turn-in day.

"And what we're doing in America, we're basically killing our own, especially younger people," Mayor Richard M. Daley said.

As more than a dozen of Chicago's at-risk kids stood nearby, the mayor and the police superintendent announced another gun turn-in day in the city.

"Today I'm asking every resident of Chicago to turn in their firearm -- shotgun, rifles, automatic, semi automatic, pistol, revolver… No questions asked," Daley said.

As they did last year, 25 churches will be collecting guns on Saturday, July 26, and giving back a $100 prepaid MasterCard for each weapon.

Last year, a record 6,700 guns were handed over.

"If we can get one gun off the street, one gun out of the homes and save just one life, that one life and this one gun being turned in does make a difference," said the Rev. Roosevelt Watkins of Bethlehem Star MB Church.

Pam Bosley joined in the appeal. She lost her son in a senseless gun murder in a church parking lot.

"Once you take our children's lives, we're devastated," Bosley said. "Our lives are taken, our hopes, our dreams, our joy."

"If you ask anyone of these family members here today, they will tell you that they want fewer guns on the street, not more," said Chicago Police Dept. Supt. Jody Weis.

Daley reminded Chicagoans that, for the moment at least, Chicago's ban on gun possession has not been overturned by the courts and is still in effect.

The city's gun turn-in program has netted more than 11,000 illegal guns since 2006.
