Buzz Flurries Around Winter Classic

CHICAGO (WBBM) -- There's a bit of a buzz in the air, now that Wrigley Field has officially been named host of the National Hockey League's Winter Classic on New Year's Day.

Last year, the inaugural event was held in Buffalo, New York in blustery conditions.

This January 1st, Wrigley Field becomes the first baseball venue to hold an NHL game, when the Chicago Blackhawks take on the Detroit Red Wings within the Friendly Confines.

Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney says the event is a great chance to showcase Wrigley Field for the world to see, especially as the city vies for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Kenney says they'll have an allotment of tickets that they'll make available to season ticket holders, most likely through a lottery.

He expects to easily fill out all 41-thousand seats.

Local bar employees are pretty excited too.

Red Ivy bartender Matt Atkins says it'll be exciting to see how Wrigley Field will be up for the event and it'll be great way to liven up the neighborhood that time of year.
