Man Shot, Killed In Beverly, No Suspects Custody

CHICAGO (STNG)  -- Neighbors of the quiet Far South Side community of East Beverly are baffled after a shooting that left one man dead and another critically wounded.

 Tracking Summer Shootings In Chicago

As CBS 2's Mike Parker reports, the shooting in the 9600 block of South Charles Street Thursday night. A gunman approached two men on foot as they sat in a parked car and opened fire around 10 p.m., police said.

The shooting happened right in the middle of a quiet, tree-lined residential block of bungalows and Georgians. People in the neighborhood were reeling Friday morning.

Hip-hop artist Robert White, 26, and his friend were the men in the car. White was hit once and killed by a gunshot.

"Anybody in the neighborhood will tell you he was a very gentle spirit, very humble, loved kids," said the victim's sister-in-law, Roberta White. "He went on a field trip when I couldn't, with my 3-year-old. He was just always doing things; taking the kids bike-riding."

White's unidentified 25-year-old companion was critically wounded and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The people who live in the area say gangs are not a problem there.

"I'm kind of surprised; this is a quiet neighborhood; nice neighborhood," said neighbor Lisa Myles. "I've been here for almost 18 years, and I've never experienced any major problems."

White's own family was distraught about his loss. He leaves behind a 6-year-old son.

"I don't know how to tell my kids, and I don't know how his son is going to deal with it," Roberta White said.

Police say a dispute earlier this week may have led to the gunfire. Calumet Area police detectives are investigating the case, and no one was in custody as of 11 a.m. Friday.
