City Sticker Snafu Means Ticket Risk For Some

CHICAGO (WBBM) - Next Tuesday is the final deadline for City of Chicago residents to have their new vehicle stickers.  Not everyone may realize that because, Newsradio 780 has learned, not everyone received the usual reminders in the mail and the city’s looking into why.

WBBM's Bernie Tafoya reports.

The City Clerk’s office says the Logan Square neighborhood on the Northwest Side and Beverly on the Southwest Side are a couple of the communities where people have been complaining they did not get their yearly application reminders to buy city stickers.

City Clerk deputy director Jay Rowell is concerned about that and tells WBBM, "We are looking into that (why people didn’t get application in mail)….and taking that very seriously." He says the mailings serve "as vital reminder for people."

Rowell says there are a couple of possible causes of the problem:  errors made putting the right vehicle owner info into city computers from hard-to-read written applications and delivery problems with the U.S. Postal Service.

He says you can expect fewer problems next year because the system is being computerized this year.

Whether you received a reminder or not, city stickers are due on your vehicle by Tuesday, July 15 or you could get a ticket.

Besides buying them at City Hall, you can buy them at currency exchanges, some banks and Jewel and Dominick's food stores, but for an extra charge.

Rowell also says city officials will be getting together with Postal Service officials after this year's city sticker process is over to determine how so many people did not receive their application reminders in the mail.
