Abandoned Newborn Doing OK, Attracts Adoption Interest

CHICAGO (WBBM) - Interest remains high in the newborn boy found in a plastic shopping bag, in the bushes outside an Uptown apartment building early Tuesday.

WBBM's Bob Roberts reports.

Doctors say the news continues to be good.

Spokesperson Moreen Keeney said Wednesday evening that a number of people have called Illinois Masonic Hospital to ask if the five-pound boy is available for adoption.

But Kenney said the hospital is telling those who wish to adopt that they must go through the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).

Keeney said the infant is "looking robust," compared with the "itty-bitty babies" in the hospital's neo-natal intensive care unit, but remains in serious condition.

So far, she said, there is no timetable for the infant's release to DCFS care.

When found, the newborn boy had a body temperature of 86 degrees.  Kenney said tests continue to assess whether the infant suffered any ongoing damage as a result of his hypothermia.

Doctors said Tuesday that they believed the child was born at or near full-term and that it was fortunate that a nearby resident, Brandon Shepard, found the baby in bushes next to the front doorway of the apartment building at 4600 N. Beacon St.
He ran with the child to a nearby firehouse.

As of Wednesday evening, Chicago Police said detectives had not identified the parents.
