Kirk Hopes To Double Federal Funding For Alternative Fuels, Cars

CHICAGO (WBBM)  -- Congressman Mark Kirk is pushing legislation through the House that would double the amount of federal dollars pumped into the Clean Cities Program.

The goal of the program is to promote the use of more alternative vehicles and fuels to reduce the country's oil consumption.

At the University of Illinois at Chicago's Transportation Center, where the school's fleet if fueled with compressed natural gas - the cleanest of all commonly used alternative fuels-Kirk met with local environmental leaders to talk about the program.

Kirk's amendment - which would double the amount of federal money for the Clean Cities Program to $25-million  - has passed through committee.
