CHICAGO (CBS 2) -- Ald. Bernie Stone (50th) is calling for cooler heads to prevail after he received a racist flyer in the mail.
Stone, who represents West Rogers Park in the City Council, is running against three opponents.
The envelope contained a campaign flyer with a picture of Stone and Mayor Richard M. Daley. Stone's face was blurred out by a swastika, while an X was drawn across Mayor Daley's face.
While Stone does not directly blame his opponents for the mailing, he said their campaign tactics have stirred up a spirit of hatred in the ward.
"For a long time, things have been very quiet, and I haven't had any problems within the community. The community has been quiet," Stone said. "But suddenly, it's erupted, and I don't like it."
Stone was elected alderman in 1973 and is the longest-serving member of the City Council.
