CHICAGO (STNG) - From Friday night through Sunday morning, nine people have been killed in acts of violence in and around Chicago.
About 11:05 p.m. Friday, a 19-year-old man was killed and a 22-year-old woman wounded in a shooting on the West Side.
The shooting happened on the 1700 block of North Linder Avenue.
The woman heard gunfire and discovered she and the man had been shot, police said.
The man, Benny Lynch, of 1642 N. Lotus Ave., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m.
The woman suffered a gunshot wound to one of her feet and was taken to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, in good condition.
On the North Side, about 1:20 a.m. Saturday, a man was found fatally shot and slumped over the steering wheel of his car at 3042 W. Montrose Ave., police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak said.
Gonzalo Hernandez-Guerta was pronounced dead at the Stein Institute at 4:05 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
Back on the South Side, about 1:40 a.m. Saturday, a 44-year-old man, Johnny Dudley, was found shot to death at 7224 S. Sacramento Ave. Dudley, of 7143 S. Whipple St., was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 2:30 a.m.
The medical examiner's office said Dudley suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Kubiak said at least one of those gunshot wounds was to the head.
Brendan Scanlon, a 25-year-old graffiti artist, was leaving a party at 3032 W. Palmer Blvd. about 2:40 a.m. Saturday when he got into a "verbal altercation" and was subsequently stabbed, police said. Scanlon, of 2846 W. Palmer Blvd., suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest.
Kirk Tobolski, 24, of the 2600 block of West Iowa Street, was charged with one count of first-degree murder Sunday in Scanlon's death, according to police News Affairs.
Saturday afternoon, about 2:30 p.m., a man was shot and killed in the 8600 block of South Marquette Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood.
Morris Gandy, 25, of 8620 S. Marquette Ave., was pronounced dead on the scene at 6:30 p.m., a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
Gandy was shot by a gunman who walked through a gangway, approached the victim and opened fire, police said.
Gandy suffered a gunshot wound to the chest area. Authorities said the victim was a convicted felon with an "extensive" criminal record and had been "in and out of jail" for many years.
Saturday night, a 32-year-old man was fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting on the West Side.
The shooting happened about 10:30 p.m. at 312 S. Whipple St. The victim, Lawaide Labon, of 1135 S. Independence Blvd., was shot in the back by someone from a passing vehicle, according to police.
Labon was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.
A 20-year-old man who working as a DJ at a birthday party on the South Side was fatally shot at the party early Sunday.
Jonathan Swoope was at a birthday party in the Morgan Park neighborhood, when someone entered the party about 2:15 a.m. and shot him once in the back, police News Affairs Officer David Banks said.
Swoope, who was the DJ at the party, was shot by a person who was kicked out for fighting but then came back to the party and began fighting again, according to a source. It was not Swoope’s party, though his birthday was June 14.
An autopsy Sunday determined Swoope died of a gunshot wound to the back, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, which ruled his death a homicide. Swoope, of 550 N. Laramie Ave., was pronounced dead at 4:32 a.m. Sunday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
A 23-year-old man was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting early Sunday on the Far South Side while attempting to find a ride to a gas station with family members.
Parris Harrison was shot in the 8800 block of South King Drive about 4:35 a.m., according to police News Affairs. The man and his family ran out of gas near 87th St. and King Dr. and were flagging down a friend in an attempt to get a ride to a gas station when a car pulled up and began firing shots at the vehicle, police said.
Harrison was pronounced dead at 4:35 a.m. Sunday at Advocate Trinity Hospital.
The violence wasn't confined to the city, either. A 21-year-old Des Plaines man was found stabbed blocks away from his home in the northwest suburb early Saturday. Israel Moreno, of 1370 Harding Ave. in Des Plaines was found with stab wounds to the abdomen at 399 Laurel Ave. in the suburb, a medical examiner's office spokesman said.
Officers responded to a "disturbance" at the corner of Washington Street and Laurel Avenue at about 2 a.m., where they found Moreno stabbed, according to a release from the Des Plaines Police Department.
Moreno was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge at 3:09 a.m. Saturday.
Ashuri Hidou, 17, of unincorporated Des Plaines, was charged with first-degree murder Sunday in Moreno’s death, according to a release from the Des Plaines Police Department.
