Lawyer For New Trier Teen: Go Easy On Alleged Hacker

COMMENT ON THIS STORY

CHICAGO (STNG)
- A New Trier High School senior arrested for allegedly hacking into computerized student records deserves some leniency because he’s already been punished by school officials, the teen’s attorney said Thursday.

Jonah Greenthal faces up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted of the misdemeanor computer-tampering charge filed against him last month.

Greenthal, 18, was suspended from school for 55 days after the alleged hacking in February, then was banned from last weekend’s graduation, said attorney Steven Glink as the teen made his first appearance in Cook County Circuit Court.

“It’s hard on him. He’s an 18-year-old kid who was barred from his graduation,” Glink said. “It was very upsetting to him.”

Greenthal, who was allowed to receive his diploma, is accused of breaching the school’s academic database, which contained test scores, grades and class rankings. But the teen isn’t accused of destroying any data, though Glink wouldn’t comment on why Greenthal may have hacked into the system.

“There’s no allegation he changed or tampered with anything,” Glink said, adding he believes a plea deal could be quickly reached. “He’s really a good kid. I’m hoping we can work out an agreement that will satisfy everyone involved.”

New Trier officials couldn’t be reached for comment.

Is this a case for leniency?
What do you think?

THROW THE BOOK AT HIM
I HOPE HE GETS THE MAXIMUM SENTENCE. AS FAR AS I'M CONERNED HE BROKE INTO THE SCHOOL WITH THE INTENT OF TAKING SOMETHING. BREAKING INTO A COMPUTER NOWADAYS IS LIKE BREAKING INTO SOMEONE'S HOUSE. IT IS FULL OF IRREPLACABLE VALUABLES. HE'S OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW WHAT HE DID WAS WRONG, SO HE NEEDS TO BE TAUGHT A LESSON! WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD PUNK!

Throw the book at crappy IT Support
You guys need to QUIT making examples of people like this..yeah the kid is sharp, he didnt destroy anything...the IT folks who are responsible for the security should be the ones to take some of the blame as well.

Teach people rather than punish them
Maybe they should encourage the kid to go into computers rather than punish him for his curiosity. I was hired by my high school after being labeled a "security threat" and it turned out to be the one of the best experiences of my life. I went from being a kid who was good with computers to being a professional.

He is the school's customer
Don't forget, the student is the school's customer. He just wanted to know his class rank, but that info was being with held from him. Bad customer service on the school's part, unfortunately typical.

School's Customer?!?!?
First of all he isn't a customer, he is a student and he is supposed to abide by the school's rules and the laws of the city and state. Furthermore, even if your analogy was plausible, and it isn't, then he would be a customer of the taxpayers. And personally I don't want this kid as my customer.

Mercy!
Anyone who wants to see this person jailed is the lowest form of human life! A smart curious young man, made a stupid choice! Maturation and Brains do not go hand in hand. He is gifted and this country needs gifted computer genius's to aid against terrorism. He can be used to serve yet you stupid angry loosers want to destroy him. Get a Life. Live and Let Live!

Angry Trevian
I would lock this clown up and throw away the key. I'm so sick and tired of kids from the North Shore ultimately getting off easy because of their privileged socio-economic upbringings. I've observed this trend throughout my life on the North Shore. What these little creeps needs to realize is that there are consequences for your actions in the real world.

The State of Society
Stop making excuses for kids/teenagers/adults whatever you want to call someone who is at the age of knowing between good and bad but makes a CHOICE to do something BAD. Yes we all make mistakes, but those of us who are productive members of society learned from our mistakes. We received consequences which deterred us from committing future offences. He's quite too old to hear, "Oh baby made a mistake. That's OK. We'll fix it." No, you'll fix it kid and your parents too!
