State Prisoners Won?t Be Fed in Lake County, In., Jail
CROWN POINT-- Lake County Community Corrections inmates will need a new source of food. Sheriff Roy Dominguez announced his department will stop providing meals for the state prisoners beginning Wednesday, the latest apparent fallout in a dispute between the two corrections programs.
Dominguez has opposed the conversion of a wing of the sheriff's Work Release program into beds for Community Corrections -- a county transition program for inmates in the state Department of Corrections -- arguing it will lead to jail overcrowding and be costly for Lake County taxpayers.
Community Corrections Director Kellie Bittorf insists expanding her program will save the county money. She also contends the sheriff has enough room to continue Work Release at current capacity without the disputed wing.
Bittorf said she will request a special meeting of the Lake County commissioners to appoint a new food vendor on an emergency basis.
