The Cook County Jail inmate is suing Cook County claiming negligence.
Kennedy filed suit against Cook County and Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart, Claiming jail officials should have known the ceiling in his cell was in an unsafe condition.
On May 13, Kennedy, an inmate at the jail at 2700 S. California Ave., was sleeping when a large portion of the ceiling collapsed and fell on top of him, the suit said.
The suit alleges the defendants knew or should have known about the condition of the ceiling. Kennedy claims jail officials were negligent in failing to ensure the cell was safe and in proper repair and failing to inspect and repair the ceiling in the cell, the suit said.
Kennedy suffered personal and permanent injuries after the ceiling collapsed, the suit said. He seeks more than $50,000.
