UPDATE: Markham Shooting by Police Ruled a Homicide
CHICAGO -- Rigoberto Lopez took three hostages that led to a standoff in a Southeast Side automobile body shop. It ended when police shot him Saturday night.
Lopez, 24, of 10319 S. Muskegon Ave., died in a police-shooting at 9647 S. Ewing Ave., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.Sound City is listed at that location. Lopez was pronounced dead on the scene at 2:24 a.m.
About 7:50 p.m., police responded to a report of a robbery in progress in the 9600 block of South Ewing Avenue. The suspect refused to come out, police News Affairs Sgt. Antoinette Ursitti said.
Lopez had three hostages. He shot at lawmen responding to the scene, he began firing shots at responding officers, said police News Affairs Officer David Banks said. Police returned fire, and the suspect "succumbed to his injuries," he said.
Independent Police Review Authority Chief Administrator Ilana Rosenzweig confirms Chicago Police shot Lopez. Police News Affairs confirmed shots were fired and the witness reported hearing “two or three shots.”
A witness said the attempted robbery and ensuing standoff happened at a body shop.
An autopsy is planned.
•IN MARKHAM, Antoine Covington, 18, also died Saturday night after being shot by police. An autopsy Sunday revealed Covington died from multiple gunshot wounds, the Cook County Medical Examiner said. His death has been ruled a homicide. Illinois State Police are investigating.
Covington, of 15322 Cherry Lane, was fatally shot by police at 3044 W. 159th St., said the Cook County Medical Examiner.
Covington was pronounced dead at St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Olympia Fields at 10:34 p.m. Saturday.
Markham police will not release details.
