Palos West 2nd Graders Caught With Knife

Palos Community School District 118 officials confirmed Wednesday that an 8-year-old boy brought a knife to school last week.

No one was injured. Supt. Joe Dubec declined to comment on what disciplinary action was taken against the boy. He would only say, "There were consequences to the child's actions."

The child brought the knife to Palos West Elementary School, 12700 S. 104th Avenue in Palos Park.

Dubec said the knife was found in the student's backpack inside his classroom.

Kids playing on the playground overheard the child talking and informed a teacher, who then searched the child's backpack and found the knife.

Dubec said no letter was sent home to parents informing them of the incident.

"We don't generally send a letter home for something like this," he said. "We look at each case individually.

"Our main concern is the safety of all the kids."

Cook County sheriff's police spokeswoman Penny Mateck did not return calls about the incident. Sheriff's police have jurisdiction because the school is in unincorporated Cook County.
