DUNHAM -- Steven J. Kunkel died when the motorcycle he was riding collided with an SUV in an unincorporated area of Dunham Township near northwestern Harvard.
A 2001 Toyota Sequoia was north on Route 14. It collided head-on with a southbound 1975 Harley Davidson in the northbound lane just north of Lindwall Road about 9:20 p.m., according to the McHenry County Sheriff.
The motorcycle’s driver, Kunkel, 51, of Harvard, was thrown clear of the wreck. He was taken to Mercy Harvard Hospital in Harvard where he died. Kunkel was not wearing a helmet.
The Toyota’s driver, Maria G. Lagunas, 27, of Cary, was treated and released at the scene. Two passengers -- Marcial Calderon, 19, of Texas, and Adrianna D. Silva, 29, of Cary -- were also treated and released at the scene, the release said.
Everyone in the Toyota was wearing seatbelts;the airbags deployed.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
