Carbon Monoxide Leak Hospitalizes Day Care Children

CHICAGO -- A carbon monoxide leak Thursday in a Northwest Side day care center left 11 young children hospitalized.

Fire Media Affairs Cmdr. Will Knight said a HazMat response was initiated after about 12:45 p.m. after reports of high carbon monoxide levels at a school at 1014 N. Mozart in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Infant Community Montessori is listed at that address.

Eleven children were transported to area hospitals in good condition for observation, Knight said. Three adults refused treatment on the scene.

Fire officials found medium levels of carbon monoxide and ventilated the building. The HazMat was secured about 1:30 p.m. and people were allowed back in the building by 2 p.m., according to Knight.

The incident remains under investigation. No one from the school would comment.
