A collection of bones found by a young man walking in a south suburban forest preserve Wednesday afternoon have been determined to be human by the Cook County Medical Examiner.
The bones are human, but the person’s gender and approximate age remain unknown, a spokesperson for the medical examiner’s office said Thursday afternoon. He said the bones could have been at the site for “years.”
Forest District police spokesman Steve Mayberry stressed there is "no reason to believe" the remains are related to any current, high-profile missing persons’ cases.
At about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Cook County Forest Preserve police were notified that a young man walking in Black Partridge Woods, just off Bluff Road in Lemont Township, found the bones -- some partially covered by dirt, others on the surface, according to a release from the district.
Police responded to the scene and were directed to the remains, which included about a dozen bones from the feet and other, larger bones, the release said. Police could not immediately identify what body parts the larger bones came from.
Police took their bloodhound to the scene, but the dog was unable to find any further remains. Police also walked around the area conducting a visual search but found no more bones.
Forest Preserve police and the Cook County Sheriff’s police continue to investigate.
