Surburban Churches Change Service Times For Super Bowl

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (STNG)  -- Capping off a divine season, the Bears will be altering some local churches' plans this Super Bowl Sunday.

Naperville's Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church are among those making some scheduling changes for the big game.

With a 5:30 p.m. kickoff time, St. Thomas is canceling its 8 p.m. service, typically geared toward high school students and young adults, figuring attendance would be lacking and that people would want to watch the game with family and friends, said Robert Frazier, co-director of liturgy and music. The decision was made several months ago, though, before the playoffs even started.

"Because it's the Bears in the Super Bowl, (it) is just an extra reason," Frazier said.

Come Sunday, Frazier said the Bears would be receiving help on all fronts.

"There might be praying for the Bears, too," Frazier joked.

And do the Bears need prayers?

"I don't think it hurts," he said. "Any prayer helps ... just in case they need that little extra."

Our Saviour's, however, is going ahead with plans for a Sunday night service but with a slight modification: the service will be during halftime.

"Instead of watching Prince, we'll be discussing the prince (Jesus)," church worker Judy Brandt said, quoting an unofficial slogan for the celebration.

For the game, Our Saviour's will have two giant projection screens set up at its Celebration! Community Life Center complete with hotdogs and football comfort food.

And who is eligible to join in the celebration?

"Family, friends and even Colts fans," the event statement says.
