Burke Tries Again To Get Restaurants To Post Calorie Contents

COMMENT ON THIS STORY

CHICAGO (WBBM)
- Powerful 14th Ward Ald. Edward Burke is again proposing an ordinance that would force restaurant and fast food chains to post the calorie contents of its foods on menus and menu boards.

WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports:

This time, says Alderman Ed Burke, the ordinance conforms to a court ruling on a similar measure in New York. The New York City Board of Health is about to begin enforcing its rule, and Burke says Chicago's ordinance would conform with that.

He says if people knew exactly what they were eating, they might make healthier choices. For example, he notes a McDonald's Deluxe Big Breakfast can be more than 1,100 calories.

Burke acknowledges many people might go ahead and order anyway, but he’s hoping parents will make healthier choices for their children.

The proposed measure is aimed at the larger restaurant chains.
