UPDATE: Puppy Adoptions from Closed Breeding Farm on Hold
Southtown Star Reporting
JOLIET -- Prospective puppy owners hoping to adopt one of the 50 Yorkies, pugs and Chihuahuas rescued from a south suburban puppy mill are going to have a little longer.
The owner has filed a lawsuit in Will County Circuit Court to get the animals returned. Pending a hearing on the case, a judge ordered the dogs remain in the possession and care of the PAWS Animal Shelter.
Ten of the dogs were scheduled to be available for adoption Saturday.
A volunteer at PAWS said the facility is very disappointed to be embroiled in legal action over the case because it detracts from the important services the shelter provides.
The judge has scheduled a hearing April 16.
Cook County sheriff's police rescued 49 dogs from what they described as squalid conditions at in Peotone on Saturday.
The dogs, mostly toy or designer breeds, reportedly were found living in cages stacked four high in a shed warmed by a space heater. Up to seven dogs were crowded into a cage, and many were found soaked with their own urine, their fur matted with feces, police said.
Investigators with the sheriff's department said the owner signed the dogs over to them. They said they did not expect to file charges for several days, and would not name her, but they said her business is called Phoebee's Puppies
