CHICAGO (AP) -- A new study says visitors to Chicago's renowned museums are disproportionately white, educated and affluent.
The University of Chicago study concludes that the city's large arts organizations aren't doing enough to attract people from low- income or minority communities.
The researchers looked at data from a dozen of the city's biggest cultural attractions, including the Art Institute and the Field Museum.
The study released yesterday suggests changes in fees, hours of operation and transportation options if the museums want to attract a more diverse visitor base.
Valerie Waller of the Museum of Science and Industry says officials are aware of the disparities. But they're not sure why so few minorities and low-income residents visit the museum.
