Woman Struck, Killed By School Bus

CHICAGO (WBBM/STNG)  -- A 35-year-old woman died Friday after being struck by a school bus on the city's West Side, police said.

The woman was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital at 9:14 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, which was withholding her identity pending notification of family, though she is believed to have lived near the site of the accident.

The bus was traveling north on Western Avenue, near West Jackson Boulevard, and hit the woman crossing the street as the bus was making a right turn onto eastbound Jackson, according to Monroe District police Capt. Hootan Bahmandeji.

It was not a hit-and-run and the driver, a male, received a citation for striking a pedestrian in the roadway, the captain said. The yellow school bus involved was owned by a private company.

There were kids on the bus at the time, but none of them were injured and no one else was taken to hospitals, Fire Media Affairs Asst. Director  Eve Rodriguez said.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
