CHICAGO (STNG) - Felony charges have been approved against a motorist shot by Chicago Police after he attempted to veer the car he was driving into police officers early Sunday on the Near South Side.

Aaron Williams, 21, of the 100 block of South Hamlin Blvd., was charged with two counts of aggravated assault to an officer Sunday and is expected to appear in South Felony Court (Br.48), 155 W. 51st St., Jan. 7, according to police News Affairs Officer David Banks.

Police News Affairs Officer John Henry said two on-duty officers fired their weapons about 4:15 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of East 29th Place. Henry said police shot one man in the leg.

The man was sleeping in the driver’s seat of a Chevrolet car that was parked with its engine running when two officers approached.

The officers saw a gun in the backseat area near the floorboards. When the man woke up he became “startled” and reached for another gun in the front seat area, police said. He began driving and swerved the car towards the officers. The officers fired their weapons, hitting the man in the leg.

After being shot, he drove about a mile before being taken into custody after crashing and attempting to run, according to Prairie District police Lt. Michael Pigott.

The man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was in non-life-threatening condition Monday morning
