CHICAGO (WBBM) -- Mayor Richard M. Daley is shrugging off the Rev. Al Sharpton's threat to work against Chicago's bid to host the Summer Olympics if the city doesn't do more about police brutality.
WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports from City Hall.
Rev. Al Sharpton is threatening to bring past victims of Chicago police torture to International Olympic Committee members if Daley doesn’t take several specific steps to confront misconduct on the force. But, Daley scoffs at the attempt to undercut the City’s bid for the 2016 games.
Daley says if Sharpton is threatening Chicago’s Olympic bid over police misconduct, he can get in line, with the Daley’s other critics. Daley says his Administration opposes any brutality whether from police or criminals, but he says Chicago’s Olympic bid should be above politics.
On the South Side Daley said the city is taking strong steps in response to brutality, including beefing up the agency that investigates Police misconduct. But he stresses the overwhelming majority of police are good.
The Mayor notes Rev. Sharpton is from New York City which has also had some high-profile police brutality cases, and he doesn’t recall the ministers threatening that City’s Olympuc bid four years ago.
