Clinton Encouraged By Increased Republican Support

CHICAGO (WBBM) - A fundraiser was held Thursday night at Morton's Steakhouse on Wacker Drive for Democratic Presidential hopeful Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton, as well as a few fundraisers at the Hilton.

WBBM's Jennifer O’Neill reports

Clinton told reporters ahead of the fundraisers that she's excited to have so many supporters, including more and more Republicans.

She also expressed disappointment in President Bush for his veto of S-CHIP, or State Health Insurance Program.

Clinton says five million additional children could have had health insurance under the plan, and she says efforts are under way to try to override the president's veto.

She says a few more Republican votes are needed in the House to do so.

Clinton was asked by reporters about criticism over her idea to give a $5,000 savings bond for college to every child born in the U.S.

She responded by calling it an idea, not a policy.

Clinton noted that she just wanted to start a conversation, and when asked about Republican hopeful Rudy Guiliani's comment that it would serve as a magnet for more illegal immigrants, Clinton responded by saying she's not responding to anyone else.

She was asked about the war in Iraq, and responded by saying we all want to get out, and when she's president she plans to pull out troops in a prudent fashion, and as quickly as possible.

Since she's from Park Ridge, and challenger Barack Obama is from Chicago, Clinton said she plans to compete hard in Illinois, and plans to win in Illinois.

She laughed and said “no” when asked whether she's bothered by GOP candidates attacking her more than the other candidates.
