CHICAGO (WBBM) -- Cook County's sanctuary status for immigrants could determine whether politicians approve a sales tax increase.
WBBM's Nancy Harty reports that there is a move to temporarily revoke the provision which means the county can't deny health care to immigrants because of their legal status and county employees can't ask about it.
That was mentioned during a conversation between board President Todd Stroger's chief of staff and commissioner Roberto Maldonado about the sales tax vote, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The newspaper says Maldonado took it as a strong move so that he would vote for the two percentage point hike.
Stroger told reporters on Sunday morning at an event at Sweet Holy Spirit Church that he's not behind the move to revoke sanctuary and he's not worried about the story.
He says he and Maldonado need to sit down and talk but that he's still 'with' the commissioner.
The vote is slated for tomorrow after the public gets a chance to comment during a finance committee hearing at 9.
The tally is expected to be a close one. Maldonado originally said he would support the increase.
