Cardinal George Gets Sympathetic Hearing At South Chicago Church

CHICAGO (WBBM)  -- The Survivors Network of Those Abused By Priests is calling for Chicago's Cardinal Francis George to resign.

But members of one community think he's doing just fine, according to WBBM Newsradio 780's Jennifer O'Neill.

St. Michael's Church in the 8200 block of South Shore Drive was more packed than normal during Sunday morning's 9:30 service.   That's because parishioners wanted to hear what Cardinal George had to say.

While the church leader didn't address the priest sex abuse scandal during his sermon, people like Martha Andrez says that's OK.

She echoes the comments of other parishioners here, who think he should stay on as head of the Chicago Archdiocese.

During his sermon, the Cardinal urged the congregation to use the upcoming fasting period to rid themselves of anything that would keep them away from God.

He told those gathered that fasting helps empty us and make Christ clearer in our lives.

He compared our relationship with Christ to that of a marriage, where we must give entirely in order to grow in ways never thought possible.

More people than normal came out to mass.

Elvira is a parishioner who, like others, is just grateful that he took the time to come to St. Michael's. Overall, she's neutral on his handling of the situation, only because she needs more details.

Others tell WBBM they feel he's doing the best he can.
