Young robber may head to boot camp

WHEATON (STNG)  -- A young Westmont man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in an aborted armed robbery last fall in the south-central part of Naperville.

But Luis A. Martinez could avoid that fate should he successfully enroll in and complete an "impact incarceration program," a form of boot camp for first-time criminal offenders overseen by the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Martinez, 17, pleaded guilty in DuPage County Circuit Court to a felony charge of attempted armed robbery with a firearm. Judge Perry R. Thompson on Tuesday accepted Martinez's plea and approved his likely placement in the boot camp program.

Thompson also gave Martinez 227 days of credit toward his sentence for time he has served in DuPage County Jail since being arrested, according to court records.

Martinez, two other men and two juveniles were arrested following the attempted Nov. 15 holdup of a 19-year-old man. The victim told police he had just left the Ponds of Naperville, a condominium community and former apartment complex at 1327 Modaff Road.

One of the would-be robbers drew a silver-colored handgun and demanded an undisclosed type and quantity of property from the victim, police said last year.

The man instead took out his wireless telephone and began to dial 911, police said. The suspects ran to a parking lot, got into a car and sped away from the scene, police said.

Police cars fanned out through the area. A brief chase ensued, with the getaway car curbed soon after near Waxwing Avenue and Terrance Drive.

The gun was found later near Bailey Road and Washington Street. Several of the suspects had bailed out of the car near 75th Street and Clyde Drive during the chase.

Martinez and the juveniles were quickly rounded up and arrested, as was the driver, Sylvester M. O'Reilly, now 21, of the 1400 block of Swallow St. in the city's Maplebrook II neighborhood.

The fifth suspect, Eric T. Maschmeier, was arrested two days later in Aurora. Maschmeier, now 19, lives on the 900 block of Heathrow Lane in The Fields area of central Naperville.

The criminal cases against O'Reilly and the juveniles — then ages 15 and 13 — have reportedly been concluded. Maschmeier as of last week still faced trial on a charge of attempted armed robbery with a firearm.
