Where is the Lake Pollution Coming From?

CHICAGO (WBBM)  -- A new report may make you rethink taking one last dip in Lake Michigan before the end of summer.

The National Research Defense Council found Illinois closed 23 of its beaches last year- more than any other state.

Congressman Mark Kirk says it's not clear where the pollution is coming from that led to the closures.

He and Congresswoman Judy Biggert are pushing the U.S. Senate to approve $40 million for more water testing.

The House already OK'd the measure, which Kirk says will help determine where the source of pollution in Lake Michigan, which he famously blamed on 'cheesehead sewer water' in 2004.

The Chicago area had a high number of beach closures that year and Milwaukee had dumped 4.6 billion gallons of sewage into the lake after heavy rains shortly before Kirk made the comment.
